Libra Sun   written by Shirley Eftoda

Within the first six signs of the zodiac the energies were related to the subjective world. Now in the last six signs the energies begin an outward shift to the world beyond one's self; the objective world. Once one has passed through the subjective stages of development it becomes important to relate to that which is not the personal self while still maintaining one's individuality. We now begin to initiate actions in the area of relationships and relating to the world at large.

Libra's need is for relationship. It is through relationships that it learns its lessons. During the process of determining how to be in relationship it attains the equilibrium/balance it seeks. This does not only include relationships with others but our own relationship to our own self. True marriage or merger with another is only possible to the extent that we merge with the Divine spark within and maintain an on-going relationship with our mind, emotions, body and spirit. In owning responsibility for our "fate" we are led to cultivate our own inner integration, our wholeness and our center which then allows us to enter relationships that offer both opportunities for mutual growth and spiritual union.

Libra is sensitive to the anxiety and conflict which is created by opposing forces within and outside itself. When out of balance it can blame others as they are driven by the urge to find inner and outer stability. However, it is only by experiencing the nature of contrasting but related attributes, qualities and energies that it learns how to harmonize them.

Libra becomes aware that it has to do what it hates the most: making choices. To choose between two alternatives is horrible because one is excluded and the synthesis that is obtained in the merger is foregone. Libra doesn't like to prioritize or evaluate because it does not recognize a hierarchical structure.

Libra knows that balance is achieved only on higher ground. Rarely is there balance at the level of day-to-day problems. The path of balance requires our Libran energies to develop the ability to perceive right values and fair judgment in dealing with others (1). Why fairness? Because it is only when we are all getting what we need will there be equilibrium/balance in the world. Libra believes that everyone deserves to be recognized and get what they need. It is compassionate because it cares. It says that Love is what makes the world go round.

Libra is an air sign and operates in the mental realm. It elevates us above our belief systems; there is no one or right way; there are no fixed rules. There are many appropriate ways; there is a reality beyond right and wrong.

The scales are Libra's zymology. The more peaceful we are within ourselves the easier it is to balance what is on our scales. The test is in how we handle what comes our direction. The goal is to find a way to enjoy all experiences of life and still maintain inner stability.

Libra is opposite (Aries) wants to fight it out, but Libra does whatever possible to avoid conflict as it wants the least pain and struggle. The challenge is finding how we negotiate life in our conflicting world or in our conflicting minds. Libra teaches us that the trick is to rise above the conflict. When we stop judging what is right and wrong or good and bad we are operating above the level of conflict and duality. We are then operating in another level of reality where things are just the way they are. It is this area of reality that Libra loves to stay within.

Libra attempts to reduce the differences between people to get into the heart space where we experience our common bond as this is where we experience the Higher Love that Libra is talking about. Not a passionate emotion; it is the basic fabric of the Universe.

In the past our attitude toward relationships and marriage has tended to be rather superficial. Myths have encouraged us to look for and expect to find ideal mates who would have made us feel completely happy. We now realize that to reach fulfillment in relationships we have to attain fulfillment within ourselves. Idealistic fantasies no longer cover up and gloss the anguish we experience in co-dependent relationships where we are waiting for others to make us content. When we have our own definition of self, we can separate our thoughts, feelings and responses from those of others. If we can't, relationships become entangled messes of interlocking neuroses and psychic garbage.

There are some Librans who seek relationships because they need them to find balance within themselves or are looking for someone to fill the needs that they cannot fill for themselves. Co-dependence is the archetype here. Their quest is for the perfect match. Eventually the creation of unsuccessful partnerships makes them realize that fantasy is a cruel illusion. The basic conflict is between self and others.

When Libra gains the ability to separate itself from others, and recognize itself and others as independent beings it becomes more aware of the true dynamics of relationship. Now they search for ways to balance conflicting interests and try to help everyone in getting their needs met. They realize that their outer wars are a reflection of their inner wars. They search for partners who complement but do not substitute for their path to wholeness. They become conscious of oppositions and the need to work with polarized forces in a way that creates harmony; all the while aware of the tension produced when life is not in harmony.

When the personality is aligned with the inner self Libra becomes a servant of humanity. It uses its energy as a force to synthesize delicate and volatile situations. The goals are accomplished by compassion of the heart and the right use of will in making choices that align human and Divine Will. They have found the common thread and shared vision which unites opposing forces.

Since everything in the Universe is in relationship all the time the innate urge for peace, harmony, and joy encourages us to learn what we came here to learn. It is through Libra that we realize that what we are looking for in the 'other' we must find within ourselves; whatever is lacking in the 'other' is what is lacking within; and whatever we want from the 'other' we must give to ourselves first. When this is realized we experience Libran love; not because the 'other' is there to hold us but because we know that we are being held in the arms of the Divine Beloved.

The Sun is in Libra from September 22nd through October 23rd. Both the New Moon in Libra is on October 15th & 16th which is a good time to set intentions for the upcoming year in the area of relationships with self and others.
