Aquarius Sun

written by Shirley Eftoda

Uranus rules Aquarius.  Uranian energy is quick, sudden and unpredictable.  Uranus disrupts our comfort zones and security blankets while shaking up stable patterns without any concern about playing it 'safe'.  Uranus's specialty is flipping the switch that sets us free.  It is the awakener: awakening the mind and finding that reality is nothing like you thought it was.

Uranus has been in Aquarius since January 12th, 1996 and will remain until December 30th, 2003.  Neptune entered Aquarius November 28th, 1998 and will remain until February 4th, 2012.  It is easy to identify all the Aquarian events in our lives with 2 of the 3 outer planets in Aquarius; one classic example that most of us are familiar with being the Internet which has created virtual communities, friendships and business partners.

Aquarius will be the astrological influence and frame of reference for our evolution for the next 2000 years as we are now in the transition to the Aquarian Age.  This will involve a complete shift in our consciousness and worldviews.  Our collective purpose will be shown through the characteristics, nature and goals of Aquarius which will include independence, interdependence, invention and collective welfare.  The territory will be science, technology, education and mass dissemination of information.

Aquarius teaches us that the expression of service through technological innovation necessitates group cooperation and a spiritual approach to life.  Our spiritual awareness leads us to create unity, synthesis and universality in our actions.  The evolution is from 'ME' to 'WE'.

Full Aquarian expression is realized only when we participate in the larger expression of the Divine through the collective. Individual consciousness manifests and merges with group consciousness.  Group consciousness connects the group and its parts to Universal consciousness.  Then the experience of Universal consciousness nourishes, inspires and fuels collective action toward common goals.  In other words, by polarity Leo's individual consciousness and Aquarius's collective consciousness merge into cosmic consciousness; becoming expressions of Divine Will.  Leo is individual creativity.  Aquarius is evolutionary change.  Personal will aligns with Divine will.

Aquarius is an air sign.  The Aquarian mind is clear, able to think in categories and instantly process information with original results combining the intellect with the intuition.  They are the true original thinkers perceiving new possibilities and holistic solutions while living in a reality where radical experiences are the norm.  The mind is not cluttered by logic, unconcerned with approval, has the capacity for objectivity and detachment along with a nonjudgmental attitude.  It sees each individual as unique and honors everyone simply because they are a part of the human race.  It lives in a reality that transcends artificially created separations and boundaries.

If Aquarius does not make a contribution to the collective, he will not fulfill his destiny path.  The weird behaviors sometimes acted out by Aquarians can be partially explained by their frustration and unconscious knowing that they are missing the mark.  If they have not identified and are not actively involved in an area of service,  they will not feel complete.

All the air signs show us that when the human mind is restricted by limited perceptions and shut off from interactions with the Universal Mind, it becomes its own prisoner and remains a victim of its own self-perpetuating and self-sabotaging thoughts.  Mental isolation breeds loneliness, social isolation, fear of communication and a sense of intellectual inadequacy.  Frustration is constantly compounded as there is no escape from one's own mind.

Some Aquarians may adopt a carefree attitude towards life as a result of not having a grounded sense of self.  A superficial sense of self may lead them to seek constant attention through outrageous actions, unconventional dress or bizarre behavior while projecting themselves into society in a confusing manner.  They may become social butterflies and cram their life full of social activities leaving themselves no time to be alone or get in touch with their own uniqueness.  Their belonging occurs by joining many groups and identifying the ideas of the group rather than their own.  The tragedy now is that they end up following someone else's dream rather than their own.  This Aquarian now becomes a follower rather than the leader that he/she was born to be.

Other Aquarians are seen as 'loner' types that do not fit into the group.  They are aloof and isolated, not out of lack of interest in others but because causal friendships and superficial social interactions do not fit their personality.  They behave as an outsider because their sense of separateness is genuine.  They do not conform to popular socially acceptable behavior, not because they want to be different, but because they ARE different.  This inability to act the part in artificially friendly social situations reflects their inability to be dishonest to themselves and others; feeling comfortable only in groups that share a deeper bond where the link is of an inner, not an outer nature.  It is the search within themselves that lead them to connect to the hearts of others.  Their goal is to experience a sense of belonging even when they are alone.

The third type of Aquarian are those whose universal connection is real and they have a genuine interest in humanity, compassion for every human being and willingness to work toward the common good.  The sense of commitment and participation in the collective is now based in a real experience inside themselves.  They use their natural gift of networking to align other individuals in a group around a common goal.  Through these creative efforts these Aquarians make their impact on the world.  Now the mind, body and emotions are 'streamlined' into a unique expression of the Soul.

These are the Aquarians that teach us to trust the process of life.  It is this process that enables change to occur and freedom to result.  Aquarius now teaches us that the only way to change the world is to change oneself and the more we are in touch with the Self the more we are in touch with the Universal.  Individualized consciousness becomes universal consciousness.  The Revolution begins within.  It is about waking up.

Aquarius is now ready to sacrifice themselves to the higher good of the collective as their selfless service is not really a sacrifice, but a further evolution of the Self.  The Aquarian spirit in all of us has a deep innate desire and need to be a valuable and valued part of the community.
